| Customer Reviews: From folk to punk in ultra-lo-fi July 26, 2010 Michael Lichter (Buffalo, NY USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Most of this collection sounds like it was recorded in a garage with a 20-year-old mono cassette recorder. The vocals sound distant and, in the louder rockers, distorted. As a result lyrics are almost impossible to make out in most of the tracks. The selection of artists is eclectic, ranging from the folky Carissa's Weird and Moondoggies to the Western-ish The Dutchess & The Duke, to punky Golden Triangle and Unnatural Helpers. There's nothing truly terrible in the collection, but even the best tunes are just "not bad."
1. "Drunk With The Only Saints I Know" by Carissa's Weird features spoken/chanted lyrics over acoustic guitars, piano and synthesizer, with whispery background vocals. It's a nice layered effect, kind of like shoegazer rock without the electricity.
2. "Sunshine/Pretty Girls" by Unnatural Helpers is a lively punk rocker that fits in pretty well with the apparent lo-fi ethic of the label.
3. "Cold Bones" by Golden Triangle / The Fresh & Onlys sounds like the Ramones getting together with the girl band from down the block. Unintelligible lyrics, lots of reverb, lots of "oh oh oh", and a bit of harmony. One of the catchier tunes on the album.
4. "Head Of Steam" by Golden Triangle / The Fresh & Onlys is uptempo and bouncy and also reminiscent of the Ramones, but not at their best. Probably the worst vocal quality in the collection.
5. "Living This Life" by The Dutchess & The Duke has a 1950s Western feel, featuring electric-guitar-picking over booming drums and synth-strings. Living this life is "hard," apparently, and boring.
6. "Undertaker" by The Moondoggies. Moody folk. Not that bad.
7. "Come To View (Song For Neil Young)" by Arthur & Yu. No idea what this has to do with Neil Young, although the recording quality isn't much worse than "Sugar Mountain". Like "Living This Life," has a 1950s Western feel.
8. "Forgive Me" by Le Loup is bongo-ific, rhythmic, and monotonous, with unintelligible lyrics distantly half-chanted by two or more singers in unison. Not too bad, if you're OK with ambient.
9. "Girl In The Window" by Unnatural Helpers is another punk rocker, this time inspired more by DEVO than the Ramones, and not very good.
10. "Jinx" by Golden Triangle is peppy girl band garage rock that sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom.
11. The recording quality on "Mary" by The Dutchess & The Duke is better than anything else in the collection. Think early Bob Dylan, but with less vocal talent.
