Amazon.com essential recording
From the swaggering frustration in the first song ("I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping," Mick Jagger sings in the hyper "Rocks Off"), the Stones speed through familiar neighborhoods of country, blues, and R&B on Exile. They never even bother to stop when they've crashed into something. They don't leap into new worlds so much as master the old ones, turning Slim Harpo's blues obscurity "Hip Shake" into a harp-and-piano steamroller and setting spines a-cracking in "Ventilator Blues." Both "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards's "Happy" have become hits, but the 1972 album is most notable for its overall murky adrenaline. --Steve Knopper

Amazon.com
Before Keith Richards's bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess--Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol--but that's just part of this album's hazy game. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Clasic Cd for an stones fan.   September 3, 2010
David Disch (Wisconsin, USA)
I really enjoy listening to this cd from time to time and even the additional unreleased tracks cd produces 2 classics on it! It's a definite own for any stones fan. Some call it there greatest work. I consider it in the top 5. This really shows the range though of the rolling stones in so many ways from rock / blues / country. So if you don't own this buy it! And if you don't get the hype the first listen through listen to it again :)

Pretty good. I liked the additional bits of bluesy stuff. I have the album, I just wanted the Deluxe CD for the few extra tunes. Took forever to get here. Almost a month! Quite slow rolling.......

I may be one of the oldest Stones listeners out there. Saw there fist American tour in person. Am able to PLAY most all their songs on my guitars. This makes me more of an authority than 99% of the "fans."

When you break down their songs for musical effort, knowledge, and content the R.S. made 3 good songs since Brian left / died. Mick Taylor did help but he saw what these guys had become and left.

The 3 songs: Honky Tonk Women, Gimme Shelter, and Wild Horses. You might throw Brown Sugar in there but I'm not too sure.

Want to save a ton of $$$. Buy only ANY of their first 8 albums period.

"Tumbling Dice" and "Happy" are quality Stones cuts, but beyond that I don't get the hype over "Exile on Main Street". I think there's just too much here and too much of it is filler. I can remember owning some "Cure" cd's that were like that. Don't get me wrong, I think when the Stones had there heads screwed on straight they made great music. I mean the two disc DSD Stones Greatest Hits Volume Two is an absolute must! I more enjoy the collections from the Stones because you get the great cuts without the rebellious bluesy whatever one might call that Dylanish muck! Same thing as what's left when you remove "Tumbling Dice" and "Happy" from this cd. Same thing with "Sticky Fingers". Take away "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" and the rest of it is just nasty! I suppose even "Brown Sugar" is a little dicey if you understand what they're talking about! I own the DSD two disc set, Goat Head Soup, Tattoo You and the blue one with the lion on front. That's all I can handle!
